Title:                                       A Scaffold Builder / Insulator
Reports to:                            Supervisor
Employment Status : Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Pay Rate:                               38.50 - 44.36
Location:                             North/Central Illinois around Morris/Manhattan

Primary Function:

The Scaffold Builder / Insulator A is normally responsible for, the lay out, figuring material needs, building of simple scaffolding and insulation systems, including; responsible for the layout, figuring materials and installation of systems and directing other members of the crew. Duties of a Scaffold Builder / Insulator A will include but are not limited to: safety, quality, and notifying the Supervisor of material and equipment needs.  The Scaffold Builder / Insulator A may be a component scaffold builder / insulator but has not demonstrated the qualifications of a lead man.

Manhattan Mechanical Services is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment.  As such, all employees will be required from time to time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of this job description and their normal work function.

Work Environment:
The normal work environment will be in an industrial facility where exposure to outdoor weather conditions is possible and where proper PPE is required for a variety of potential hazards.

Roles & Responsibilities:
The roles and responsibilities of a Scaffold Builder / Insulator A may include but are not limited to the following items.

• Constructs and/or assembles scaffolding in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards, including OSHA.
• Designs and build normal scaffolding systems less than 50 feet in height.
• Directing other members of the scaffold crew.
• Safe use of hand and power tools.
• Read prints and understand material takeoffs.
• Field determines measurements, fabricate and install insulation and covering systems.
• Selects types and size of insulation, covering and related materials according to job specifications.
• Consults supervisor or lead man regarding working loads prior to construction.
• Is capable of recognizing hazards regarding scaffolding installation.
• Inspects and selects the proper materials and locations for the scaffolding sites.
• Constructs work platforms using the proper materials.
• Uses wrench or hammer to erect steel system type scaffolding, using tubes, ladders and braces held together by fittings such as couplers (clamps) or system connectors.
• Climbs and inspects all completed scaffolds and tags either green or yellow for use by others.

• Housekeeping of job site
• Prioritizing tasks
• Getting all tools and materials used by his or her crew to their proper place at the end of shift
• Keeping track of all components and materials for his or her job.
• Working safely at all times.
• Must be willing to provide guidance and on the job training experience to the Scaffold Builder / Insulator B and helpers.
• Completion of JSA’s.
• Fully participate in health, safety, quality and environmental processes.
• Is an ambassador for Manhattan Mechanical Services to the client, other contractors and the public.

Qualification Guidelines:
Experience :

• Experience in the Petrochemical Industry or related field, with two or more years of experience in scaffold building or has gained the knowledge to perform the duties of the Scaffold Builder / Insulator A.

Skills :

• Climbing in a proper manner including following 100 percent tie-off policy.
• Working knowledge of Manhattan Mechanical Services scaffolding systems including system scaffold, tube and clamp, and decking systems.
• Read and understand drawings
• Working knowledge of safe rigging practices
• Complete appropriate Manhattan Mechanical Services skills assessment test(s).
• Must be able to work well as a part of a team
• Must be willing to provide guidance and onsite training experience too lesser, experienced crafts to laborers.

Education :

• Must be willing to attend continued training applicable to job as deemed necessary by Manhattan Mechanical Services.
• Completed component scaffold training course.
• Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification .

Physical :

• Must comply with Manhattan Mechanical Services drug and alcohol policy.
• Must be able to climb ladders and stairways.
• Must be able to carry 50lbs of tools and or materials.
• Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces, towers, drums, vessels, excavations, etc.
• Must be able to work extended hours on your feed on uneven surfaces, dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.
• Must be clean shaven and able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.
• Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary and as required by Manhattan Mechanical Services.

Safety/Environmental:

• Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.
• Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training.  Knowledge of refinery and chemical plant hazards which may require special precautions and PPE, such as Sulfuric, H2S and HF.
• Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
